Metal Weight Calculator
Calculate the weight of round bar, hex bar, square bar, plate and tube in aluminum 6061/7075, steel, stainless steel, brass, copper and titanium. Metric and imperial units.
How the weight is calculated
Weight = cross-sectional area × length × density. Round bar area is πd²/4, hex bar (measured across flats) is (√3/2)·s², square bar is s², plate is thickness × width, and tube is π/4 × (OD² − ID²). Densities are typical nominal values; actual weight varies slightly with alloy, temper and mill tolerance.
Machinists use this to estimate raw material cost and shipping weight before quoting. Remember to add a few millimeters of stock for facing and cut-off.
FAQ
What density is used for aluminum 6061?
2.70 g/cm³ (0.0975 lb/in³), the nominal density of 6061.
Is hex bar measured across flats or corners?
Across flats, which is how hex bar is ordered. The area of a regular hexagon is (√3/2) × s², where s is the distance across flats.
