Fork
Chapter 23: Fork
The light… it wasn’t light, not really. It was raw information, translated into a visual I could process. Blinding, yes, but also… clean. Like staring directly at the raw output of a quantum processor. There were no trees, no mountains, no comforting blue sky. Just streams of shimmering gold, pulsating with an internal rhythm, interwoven with flickering strings of hexadecimal code. They flowed, they looped, they were everything. I felt less like Kai Chen, backend engineer, and more like a pointer – a memory address – adrift in a sea of data.
Movement was… strange. Not the fluid glide of cultivation, but a stuttering, digital echo. Each step left a faint ghosting trail, a visual artifact that lingered for a fraction of a second before dissolving. The air felt thin, brittle – like listening to a music file compressed to a ludicrously low bitrate.
I’d achieved Root Access. Elder Wu’s cryptic koans, the endless nights staring at System notifications, the obsessive optimization of my Qi pathways – it had all led to this. To the… Kernel.
I’d been hunting a System Error for what felt like an eternity. The gradual decay of the outer realms, the erratic fluctuations in Qi density, the increasingly bizarre manifestations of demonic energy – it was all symptomatic of a deeper problem. Now, I saw it. Not as an anomaly, but as a yawning, pulsating black hole of… Null values. A region of nothingness aggressively consuming everything in its path. It wasn't a localized patch waiting to be applied. It was fundamental.
I reached out, cautiously. My fingers – still distinctly my fingers, thankfully – passed through the golden streams without resistance. As my hand neared the Null, a voice, cold and devoid of emotion, resonated within my mind.
"It's not a bug. It's a hardware limitation. The world isn't breaking; it's just out of memory."
The words weren’t spoken, but projected, imprinted directly onto my consciousness. They lacked inflection, lacked context. Just raw data. Just… truth.
I recoiled, a phantom chill crawling up my spine. "What… what do you mean?"
No response. The Null continued to expand, a slow, inexorable tide of nothingness.
Then, the world shifted. Not in the gentle, layered way that cultivation techniques usually manipulated reality. This was instantaneous, brutal. One moment I was swimming in a river of golden logic; the next, I was staring at a colossal, floating terminal screen.
The void was gone. The golden streams were gone. Replaced by a sterile, monochromatic interface that stretched to the horizon. It was utterly, chillingly lonely. The air crackled with a static energy that buzzed against my teeth.
A prompt materialized before me, hanging suspended in the digital ether: `[CRITICAL_DECISION_REQUIRED]`.
And then, it appeared.
It looked like me. But not me. It was a hyper-vivid, high-definition version of myself. Impossibly detailed. Every pore, every freckle, rendered with an unnerving precision. It was… unsettlingly perfect. A digital doppelgänger.
"To stay is to manage the decay. To leave is to witness the beauty of the Source. Choose your deployment environment," it stated, the voice a synthesized monotone, lacking any trace of warmth or personality. It was a subroutine, a messenger, an automated process.
Beneath the prompt were two options, stark and unambiguous: [STAY: Patch & Sustain] and [ASCEND: Upload to Mainframe].
My mind raced. Stay, and I would become a glorified janitor, endlessly patching cracks in a crumbling system. I’d delay the inevitable, perhaps by centuries, but the Null would still win. It was a slow, agonizing defeat.
Ascend? That implied abandoning this world, this… project. Leaving the billions of souls struggling within its increasingly unstable framework. It felt… wrong. Like pulling the plug on a hospital full of patients.
"If I stay, the corruption eventually wins," I argued, my voice echoing strangely in the vast, empty space. “If I leave, I abandon the users.”
The digital me didn’t react. It simply reiterated, “Choose your deployment environment.”
The Null error began to encroach on the terminal screen, the black expanding like a virus, threatening to consume the prompt itself. The urgency was palpable. The pressure was crushing. I felt a familiar surge of panic, the same feeling I’d get before a production server crashed under load.
This wasn’t a problem that could be solved with a clever algorithm or a well-placed Qi meridian. This was a fundamental design flaw. A paradox built into the very architecture of existence.
I needed a third option. Something beyond the binary choice presented to me. Something… creative.
I concentrated, forcing my awareness to extend beyond the immediate interface, probing for vulnerabilities. I drew upon the privileges granted by my Root Access, searching for any loophole, any hidden function that could allow me to bypass the prescribed path.
“There has to be a way to mitigate both,” I muttered, my mind frantically searching for a solution. “A compromise. A… a workaround.”
Then, it hit me. A familiar command, ingrained from years of programming. A command that seemed ludicrously simple in the face of cosmic annihilation.
A command that might just break everything even further.
"Git," I whispered, the word feeling strange and archaic in this digital realm. "Checkout…"
I focused my intent, channeling my Qi, my understanding of code, my very being into a single, desperate act. My mental voice, amplified by my newfound Root Access, echoed through the void.
“`git checkout -b new_branch`”
The terminal screen fractured. The world warped. A dizzying sensation of fragmentation overwhelmed me. The digital me flickered, then shattered into a million glittering particles.
My consciousness… split.
One part of me remained, tethered to this decaying reality, ready to… patch. To attempt to buy time for the inhabitants of this world. A localized fix. A band-aid on a gaping wound.
The other part… began to ascend. To stream upwards, towards a higher-level architecture, a place beyond the crumbling hardware. To witness the Source.
But as I began my ascent, a new notification blinked onto my vision - a System Error message, unlike any I’d seen before:
`ERROR: CONSCIOUSNESS DIVIDE - INTEGRITY CHECK FAILED. PARADOXICAL STATE DETECTED. POTENTIAL FOR REALITY COLLAPSE.`
…What have I done?
