Sri Lanka eSIM Guide: Hutch, Train Rides and the Hill Country
A typical Sri Lanka trip loops through the Cultural Triangle (Sigiriya, Dambulla, Polonnaruwa), Kandy, the hill country around Nuwara Eliya and Ella, a safari in Yala or Udawalawe, and the beaches of the south coast. Coverage is good in towns and along main roads. The details that matter are which network your plan uses, because the wholesale plan we track has only one, and the famous train ride through the hills, where signal comes and goes.
Which network Sri Lanka eSIMs use
Sri Lanka's mobile operators are Dialog, SLTMobitel and Hutch. In the wholesale plan data we track (catalogue dated 4 October 2026):
| Plan type | Network | Where data exits |
|---|---|---|
| Roaming, single network | Hutch (4G) | Netherlands |
Two things stand out:
- Only one network. There's no fallback when Hutch is weak, which matters most in the hills and national parks. If you'll spend a lot of time outside towns, compare plans that list other networks.
- Data exits in the Netherlands, far from South Asia. Maps and messaging work, with a little extra delay; video calls may feel slower.
Our routing table by country shows how this compares with other destinations.
Before you arrive
Visitors to Sri Lanka need an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) or a visa before arrival, and the rules for which nationalities pay have changed recently. Apply only through the Department of Immigration and Emigration's official ETA website, and check the current conditions for your passport there.
Coverage
| Area | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Colombo, Kandy, Galle | Good 4G |
| Sigiriya, Dambulla, Polonnaruwa | Good in towns; weaker at the sites themselves |
| Kandy–Ella train | Signal at stations and in valleys near towns; gaps in tunnels and remote stretches |
| Nuwara Eliya, Ella, Haputale | Good in town; patchy on hiking trails such as Ella Rock |
| Yala and Udawalawe national parks | Weak or none during safaris |
| South coast (Mirissa, Unawatuna, Tangalle) | Good in beach towns |
The Kandy–Ella train is one of the most photographed rides in Asia, and many people want to share photos from it. Expect to upload in bursts when the train passes through towns, and save the rest for your hotel's Wi-Fi.
Getting around
Tuk-tuks are everywhere; ride-hailing apps such as PickMe and Uber operate in Colombo and some other cities and show the fare up front. Many visitors hire a car with a driver for a week or more. Train tickets for popular routes sell out; book through official channels and keep the confirmation as a screenshot.
Monsoon seasons
Sri Lanka has two monsoon seasons affecting different coasts at different times of year, which is why the south and west coasts are usually visited in one season and the east coast in another. Heavy rain can delay trains and close roads in the hills. Check weather and train updates while you have signal.
How much data you'll need
| Trip | Suggested data |
|---|---|
| A week, Cultural Triangle and Kandy | 3 to 5 GB |
| 2 weeks, full loop including the south coast | 8 to 10 GB |
| Sharing with a travel partner | Add half again |
Guesthouse Wi-Fi is common but can be slow in the hills. The data guide has per-activity figures. If you're combining Sri Lanka with India or the Maldives, each country needs to be on your plan; see our India guide.
Setting up after landing
Install the eSIM at home over Wi-Fi and switch it on after landing at Colombo's Bandaranaike International Airport. Set it as your mobile data line and turn on data roaming for that line only. If there's no service, toggle airplane mode, then select Hutch manually. The full checklist is in our troubleshooting guide.
Emergency calls
In Sri Lanka, call 119 for police and 110 for ambulance. Your hotel or driver can also help you reach a local hospital.

FAQ
Do Sri Lanka eSIMs include a local number?
Most travel eSIMs are data-only. Local SIMs are sold at the airport and require your passport.
Is one network enough in Sri Lanka?
In towns and along main roads, usually. In the hills and national parks, a single network leaves you without a fallback.
Will I have signal on the Ella train?
On and off. Expect signal near stations and gaps in tunnels and remote stretches.
Can I use my eSIM during a Yala safari?
Expect weak or no signal inside the park. Download what you need before the drive.
Why is my data routed through the Netherlands?
That's how this wholesale plan is set up. It adds delay but doesn't affect your location on maps.
