eSIM Says No Service Abroad? Fix It in This Order

SuperTools eSIM Guide · Last updated 2026-10-14

You've landed, switched on your travel eSIM, and your phone says "No Service" or "Searching". Nine times out of ten the fix is a setting: the line is off, data roaming is off, or your phone is still using your home line for data. Work through the steps below in order. Most people are online again within five minutes.

First, work out which problem you have

Fix 1: Make sure the travel line is on

On iPhone, open Settings > Cellular, tap your travel line, and check Turn On This Line. On Android, open the SIM or mobile network settings and enable the eSIM. Many people install the eSIM at home, switch it off, and then forget to turn it back on.

Fix 2: Turn on data roaming for the travel line

Almost every travel eSIM needs Data Roaming switched on, because the plan comes from an operator outside the country you're in. Turn it on for the travel line only. Keep it off on your home line so your home carrier doesn't charge you. Our iPhone setup guide shows where each switch is.

Fix 3: Set the travel line for cellular data

If your phone is still sending data over your home line, the travel eSIM sits unused. Set Cellular Data (iPhone) or Mobile data (Android) to the travel line. While you're there, turn off Allow Cellular Data Switching or its Android equivalent, which can quietly fall back to your home line.

Fix 4: Toggle airplane mode

Turn airplane mode on, wait ten seconds, and turn it off. This forces your phone to search for networks again. After a long flight, phones sometimes cling to the last network they saw. If that doesn't work, restart the phone.

Fix 5: Pick the network manually

Travel eSIMs work only on the local networks the plan has agreements with. If your phone latches onto a different one, you'll see "No Service" or a network name with no data.

  1. Find your plan's supported networks in the provider's app or confirmation email.
  2. On iPhone, go to Settings > Cellular > [travel line] > Network Selection, and turn off Automatic. On Android, look for "Network operators" or "Choose network".
  3. Wait for the list to load, then choose a supported network.

This fix is especially useful near borders, where your phone may grab a network from the neighbouring country. Destination guides such as Europe explain where this happens most.

Fix 6: Check the APN

If you have bars but still no internet, the access point name (APN) may be missing. Most eSIMs set it automatically, but not all. Your provider's instructions list the correct APN. On iPhone, enter it under Settings > Cellular > [travel line] > Cellular Data Network. On Android, look under Access Point Names in the SIM settings.

Fix 7: Confirm the eSIM is installed

If the travel line doesn't appear in your settings at all, the profile may not have finished installing, or it may have been deleted. Connect to Wi-Fi and check your provider's app. If the QR code was already used, the provider has to check whether a reinstall or replacement is possible. Read what a travel eSIM is to understand why codes usually work only once.

Fix 8: Slow rather than offline

If you're connected but crawling, the cause is usually one of three things:

When to contact the provider

Contact your eSIM provider if you've worked through every step, the phone shows a supported network, and data still doesn't work, or if the eSIM vanished from your settings. Give them your order number, your phone model, the city you're in and screenshots of your cellular settings.

FAQ

Why does my eSIM show bars but no internet?

Usually data roaming is off for the travel line, cellular data is set to the wrong line, or the APN is missing. Check Fix 2, 3 and 6.

Should I turn on data roaming on my home SIM too?

No. Turn on data roaming only for the travel line. Leaving it on for your home line can lead to roaming charges.

My eSIM worked yesterday and stopped today. What happened?

Check whether you've used up your data or the plan has expired, then try airplane mode and manual network selection.

Does restarting my phone help?

Often, yes. A restart makes the phone register with the network again, which clears many temporary glitches.

Can I use Wi-Fi to contact support if my eSIM fails?

Yes. Hotel, cafe and airport Wi-Fi all work for reaching your provider's chat or email support. Keep your home line for verification texts. See keeping your home number.
