Portugal eSIM Guide: Lisbon, the Algarve, Madeira and the Azores

SuperTools eSIM Guide · Last updated 2026-10-14

Portugal is compact, well connected and increasingly popular with remote workers. Lisbon and Porto have strong coverage, the Algarve's beach towns are well served, and the islands of Madeira and the Azores are part of Portugal for mobile purposes. The questions worth checking are which networks your plan uses, whether the islands are covered without exceptions, and how much data a longer stay needs.

Which networks Portugal eSIMs use

Portugal's main operators are MEO, NOS and Vodafone, with DIGI a more recent arrival. Among the wholesale Portugal plans we track:

Plan typeNetworksWhere data exits
Roaming, two networksVodafone, NOS (5G)France, Netherlands or UK

Two networks give your phone a fallback in the hills of Sintra, along the Douro Valley and on the islands. Data exits outside Portugal, so some websites may appear in another language at first. Maps use GPS and aren't affected. The routing trade-offs are explained in what a travel eSIM is.

Coverage

AreaWhat to expect
Lisbon and PortoStrong 4G and 5G
Lisbon Metro and Porto MetroCoverage in stations and most tunnels
Sintra and CascaisGood in town; weaker in forested hills around the palaces
The Algarve (Lagos, Faro, Albufeira)Good in towns and at main beaches; patchy in coves below cliffs
Douro Valley and the interiorGood in villages; gaps on winding roads
MadeiraGood in Funchal; weaker in valleys and on levada walks
AzoresGood in towns; gaps on hiking trails and remote coasts

Madeira's levada walks follow irrigation channels deep into valleys and through tunnels. Download the trail map beforehand and check the official regional trail information for closures.

Madeira and the Azores

Both are autonomous regions of Portugal and part of the EU, so Portugal and Europe plans normally include them. As with Spain's Canary Islands, a few plans list island regions separately. If your trip is mainly on the islands, check the plan doesn't exclude them.

Remote work and long stays

Portugal is a popular base for remote workers, with co-working spaces in Lisbon, Porto, Madeira and the Algarve. For a stay of a month or more:

Combining Portugal with Spain

Many trips combine Lisbon or Porto with Seville, Madrid or Galicia. Both countries are in the EU and on most Europe plans, but check the full list, especially if you'll also visit Andorra or Gibraltar, which are often excluded. Our Spain guide covers those border areas, the Europe guide compares plan families, and the multi-country guide shows how to check an itinerary.

Getting around

In Lisbon, ride-hailing apps such as Uber and Bolt are widely used and often cheaper than visitors expect. The city's hills and trams make walking directions useful. Porto is smaller and walkable, with a metro to the airport. Trains between Lisbon, Porto and the Algarve are run by CP, whose app shows tickets and departures.

If you drive, many Portuguese motorways use electronic tolls. Ask your rental company how tolls are handled before leaving the car park.

How much data you'll need

TripSuggested data
4 to 5 days in Lisbon3 to 5 GB
10 days, Lisbon, Porto and the Algarve8 to 10 GB
A week on Madeira with daily hikes5 GB, with offline maps
A month of remote work20 GB or more, plus co-working Wi-Fi

Cafes and accommodation nearly always have Wi-Fi. The data guide has per-activity figures.

Setting up and troubleshooting

Install the eSIM at home over Wi-Fi and switch it on after landing in Lisbon, Porto, Faro or Funchal. Set it as your cellular data line and enable data roaming for it. If there's no service, toggle airplane mode, then select Vodafone or NOS manually. The troubleshooting guide covers the rest.

Emergency calls

The European emergency number 112 works throughout Portugal, including Madeira and the Azores.

FAQ

Do Portugal eSIMs include a Portuguese number?

Most travel eSIMs are data-only. Local prepaid SIMs with a Portuguese number are sold in operator shops.

Does my Portugal plan work in Madeira and the Azores?

Usually, yes, as both are part of Portugal. Check the plan doesn't list them as an exception.

Is there signal on Madeira's levada walks?

In parts. Valleys and tunnels often have none, so download maps beforehand.

Is mobile data good enough for remote work in Lisbon?

For email and messaging, yes. For long video calls, use co-working or accommodation Wi-Fi and keep mobile data as a backup.

Does a Portugal plan cover Spain?

Only if Spain is on the list. A Europe plan usually covers both.
