Croatia eSIM Guide: Dalmatian Coast, Islands and Ferries

SuperTools eSIM Guide · Last updated 2026-10-14

Most trips to Croatia follow the coast: Zagreb or Split as the gateway, then Dubrovnik, Hvar, Korčula and Plitvice Lakes, often with island hopping by ferry or catamaran. Coverage is good in towns and along the coastal road. The details that catch visitors out are ferries between islands, national parks, and the short stretch of Bosnia and Herzegovina on the road to Dubrovnik.

Which networks Croatia eSIMs use

Croatia's mobile operators are Hrvatski Telekom, A1 Hrvatska and Telemach. In the wholesale plan data we track (catalogue dated 4 October 2026), the networks are listed as follows:

Plan typeNetworks listedWhere data exits
Roaming, two networksTele2 (5G), A1 (4G)France, the Netherlands or the UK

The name shown on your phone may differ from the plan listing. If you need to select a network manually, choose one of the networks your provider lists. Two networks give your phone a fallback on islands, where one operator may cover a bay that another doesn't.

None of the Croatian lines we track exit inside Croatia. Like most European single-country plans in our routing table by country, data goes out through a gateway in France, the Netherlands or the UK. Maps use GPS and work normally; websites may appear in another language.

Coverage on the coast and islands

AreaWhat to expect
Zagreb, Split, Dubrovnik, ZadarStrong 4G, 5G in parts
Coastal road (D8)Mostly covered, with gaps on cliffs and in tunnels
Hvar, Brač, Korčula, VisGood around harbours and towns; weaker on remote beaches
Ferries and catamaransSignal near the coast; gaps mid-channel on longer crossings
Plitvice Lakes and Krka national parksGood at entrances; patchy deep in the parks

Ferries and island hopping

Ferries and catamarans between the mainland and islands are run by several operators, including the state ferry company Jadrolinija. In summer, popular sailings fill up and timetables change by season.

The road to Dubrovnik and Bosnia and Herzegovina

The coastal road to Dubrovnik crosses a short stretch of Bosnia and Herzegovina near Neum. Bosnia and Herzegovina is outside the EU and may not be on your plan, so data can stop for that part of the drive. It's a short section; keep offline maps ready. If you take a day trip to Mostar or to Montenegro's Bay of Kotor, check those countries separately on your plan's list. Our multi-country guide explains how.

Summer crowds

In July and August, Dubrovnik's Old Town, Hvar Town and Split's Diocletian's Palace fill with visitors, and mobile data can slow at peak times when many people are uploading photos in the same place. It's rarely a full outage. Upload over accommodation Wi-Fi in the evening if speeds drop.

Combining Croatia with other countries

Croatia is in the EU and on most Europe plans. It's often combined with Slovenia, Italy or Greece. Our Europe guide compares plan families, and the Greece guide covers another island-hopping destination.

Setting up after landing

Install the eSIM at home over Wi-Fi and switch it on after landing in Zagreb, Split, Dubrovnik or Zadar. Set it as your mobile data line and turn on data roaming for it only. On islands, if data stops, try selecting the other listed network manually.

Emergency calls

The European emergency number 112 works throughout Croatia. Croatia's national numbers are 192 for police, 194 for ambulance and 193 for the fire service; 195 is for search and rescue at sea.

FAQ

Do Croatia eSIMs include a Croatian number?

Most travel eSIMs are data-only. Local prepaid SIMs are sold at kiosks and operator shops.

Will I have signal on the ferry to Hvar?

Near the coast, usually. On longer crossings, expect a gap in the middle.

Why did my data stop near Neum?

The coastal road briefly passes through Bosnia and Herzegovina, which may not be on your plan.

Is there signal at Plitvice Lakes?

At the entrances and main viewpoints, generally yes. Deeper in the park, it's patchy.

Does a Croatia plan cover Montenegro?

Only if Montenegro is on the plan's list. Many Europe plans don't include it.
